Rough Cut’s first working principle is to produce theatre that is reliant upon the performer. With this underlying approach we aim to create inspiring works that are visually engaging and dramatically compelling for our audiences. As a company we aim to build a performance style that has flexibility to the demands of each story. For Rough Cut technique is tool, not a restriction, we aim to continually explore the use of the ensemble in the creation of theatre.

Our working process draws on techniques from around the world and a number of disciplines including physical theatre, dance, circus and martial arts. The process of our working ensemble remains aware of the future of theatre without being ignorant of its traditions.

The Company

Rough Cut is led by Artistic Director Dawn Fleming, and for each new project, engages a company of performers that has trained with Rough Cut on one of their unique development programmes.  Cross-art form collaborators are invited by Rough Cut to contribute to the work of the company on a project by project basis as best suits the particular creative needs of each new project.  The company was co-founded in 2003 by Dawn Fleming and Tid (Iain Tidbury).
